Services

Thomas Park, M.D. & Associates provides a very large spectrum of medical services including Consultation, Diagnosis and Treatment. See below for all medical specialties within the practice:

Consultation

Forensic Examiner

A forensic examiner refers to a professional who conducts forensic examinations in any of the forensic science fields. S/he performs an orderly analysis, investigation, inquiry, test, inspection, or examination in an attempt to obtain the truth and form an expert opinion. Every scientific and technical field has a forensic application and every forensic examination provides an expert opinion.

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)

Brain injury is a neurological disease. A traumatic brain injury occurs when an external force causes an alteration in brain function. It is often classified based on level of severity (mild, moderate, or severe), mechanism (open, penetrating, or closed), or whether the injury is localized (in a specific location) or generalized (wide spread). Individuals who sustain brain injuries require specialized rehabilitation, usually lifelong disease management and individualized services and supports in order to live healthy, satisfying and independent lives. The goal of treatment is to improve the quality of life for individuals affected by brain injury.

Diagnosis

Psychopharmacology

Psychopharmacology is the scientific study of the achions of drugs and their effects on thinking, mood, behavior and sensation. The field of psychopharmacology studies a wide range of substances, primarily focusing on the chemical interactions with the brain. This study is comprised of two areas; pharmacodynamics which is concerned how the effects of a drug are generated and pharmacokinetics which is concerned with how drugs are distributed around the body, how they are metabolized, and how they are eliminated from the body. Scientists discover new drugs by studying how chemical agents can be used to increase the power, effect, or likelihood of some bodily process, inhibit that process or modify the process.

Psychiatry and Behavioral Science

Psychiatry is a medical specialty devoted to the study and treatment of mental and emotional disorders. These disorders include various affective, behavioral, cognitive, and perceptual abnormalities. Psychiatric assessment includes obtaining an extensive history for the purpose of making a diagnosis. The assessment is generally the first stage of the treatment process, The assessment includes social and biographical information, direct observations, a mental status examination, and any extraneous data that is available (i.e. hospital records or test results). This process may be completed by a psychiatrist, but could also be a multi-disciplinary process involving nurses, social workers, psychologists, and/or occupational therapists.

Treatment

Pain Management

Pain management, also known as pain medicine, is the area of medicine utilizing an interdisciplinary approach for easing suffering and improving quality of life for those living with pain. The interdisciplinary team of professionals may be comprised of medical practitioners, clinical psychologists, nurses, occupational therapists, and physiotherapists. The team may also include physical therapists, massage therapists, and other mental-health specialists. Pain may resolve rather quickly if the underlying pathology or trauma has healed. Effective management of chronic pain often requires the coordinated efforts of many professionals. At times, medical science cannot identify the cause of pain and, when this occurs, the task becomes to relieve the suffering. Treatment approaches to chronic pain include pharmacologic measures which could include antidepressants, anticonvulsants, and analgesics. Some other approaches may be physical therapy and psychological measures, such as counseling and/or biofeedback.

Addiction Medicine

Addiction Mecicine is a specialty of medicine that deals with addiction. The process may include detoxification, rehabilitation, harm reduction, abstinence-based treatment, individual and/or group therapy to reduce the likelihood of relapse. There are all forms of addiction. One generally thinks of drugs such as alcohol or heroin. However, there are gambling addictions, as well as addictions to things such as food, sex, and the internet. Doctors focusing on addiction medicine are medical specialists who focus on addictive disease and have had special study and training focusing on the prevention and treatment of such diseases.
